As always, you have the right to remain silent. Refusing to answer CBP's questions may result in the agent persisting with questioning. If this occurs, you should ask if you are being detained.

CBP agents may swipe through your phone or look through the documents on your com- puter. The government also claims the authority to copy the data on your electronic devices.

We care about your experience with us, and we want you to have the opportunity to ask us a question, give us a compliment, or submit a complaint. The CBP Information Center handles all of these interactions, but if you have additional questions about how we process these inquiries please see below.

The CBP INFO Center (CIC) is a toll-free service for individuals with questions about CBP procedures or who wish to register a complaint about an encounter with CBP that they believe to be contrary to guidance. Individuals may also find information at: http://help.cbp.gov/.

Do not go off on tangents or tell your life story. Only answer the question that is being asked and do not provide more details than necessary. Remember, the immigration officer is doing many interviews a day, and you do not want to annoy them.

If a U.S. border control officer accesses an INTERPOL database with your criminal record in it, they'll be able to view it and cross-reference the record with U.S. databases. The border control officer will also be able to see and verify certain personal data and any criminal history.

“Border searches” are conducted without a warrant and often without any suspicion of wrongdoing. These searches involve inspection of the contents and data stored on electronic devices (including laptops, smart phones, and storage devices) belonging to any person entering the United States from overseas.

Can CBP see warrants? ›

Many travelers wonder if CBP is alerted when an inbound passenger has a warrant for their arrest issued. Yes, CBP is alerted.

Agents may search any person, the inside of any vehicle, and all passenger belongings. Agents do not need a warrant, any suspicion of wrongdoing, or consent to do any of these things. CBP's own policy requires that searches be “conducted in a manner that is safe, secure, humane, dignified and professional.”

All interviews are by appointment only - no walk-in interviews. All document updates can now be done online at CBP website Ask a Question under Topic “Trusted Traveler Programs”, followed by “update documents in my account” and “Global Entry” from the drop-down menu.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you need only answer questions establishing your identity and citizenship, although refusing to answer routine questions about the nature and purpose of your travel could result in delay and/or further inspection.
