After teaming up to great effect to claim mixed 4x400m gold for Ireland, Sharlene Mawdsley and Rhasidat Adeleke will now face off in pursuit of individual glory in the women’s 400m final.

Mawdsley and Adeleke hekped Ireland to a first European Championship gold since 1998 alongside Thomas Barr and Chris O’Donnell in a scintillating team performance on Friday night.

Quickly turning their attentions to the individual 400m, both came through their respective semi-finals in straightforward fashion on Sunday. Adeleke coasted to a win in her heat in 50.54, while Mawdsley clocked 50.99 in heat three to qualify in second place.

The athletes will return to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for tonight’s final.
