Flights to Niue

Flights Niue (1)Niue is a small island nation situated in the South Pacific. It is self-governing though looks to New Zealand for foreign affairs and defence. Tourism is the island’s largest economic sector, but being so remote and with a fairly limited tourist infrastructure the island is quieter than it could be so actually provides a great opportunity to experience South Pacific culture and hospitality.

Niue is only served by one airline. Air New Zealand offers flights to Niue Island International Airport (airport code: IUE) just once a week from Auckland, so for flights from South Africa you are limited to particular timings and would have to make sure you linked up with the Air New Zealand flight. Flights to Niue depart from Auckland on a Sunday and return on a Saturday (local time).

From South Africa you can catch a flight to Auckland from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with a number of different airlines, including British Airways, South African Airways, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Air Singapore and Qantas.

The Tourist Attractions of Niue:

Niue is known as the Rock of Polynesia, a name which no doubt has to do with the fact that this is one of the world’s largest coral islands. Evidence of the coral is apparent across the island, particularly in the amazing jagged coral chasms, and off the coast of the island there are also numerous coral reefs, this makes Niue a difficult place to access by boat. With all this coral though, Niue makes a great destination for diving and snorkelling with opportunities to enjoy the coral and the rich marine life.

Niue is not big on major tourist attractions as the main attraction is the island’s location and its climate. This is a tropical island destination most suited to visitors who want to come and relax and maybe take in some of the local Polynesian culture. Unfortunately, like so many other similar islands in the South Pacific, the population is decreasing as many of the young adults move to places like New Zealand and so the original culture is under threat.

Visitors to Niue can rent a car or for those feeling more active bicycles are also available for rent. The roads are quiet and there’s no public transport system, so bicycle or car are the only ways to get around. Exploring the island at your own pace though is a great way to see Niue, and to give you an idea of the size of the island, it takes just 40 minutes to circumnavigate it by car!

Alofi is Niue’s capital city, and the only real attraction here is its tiny size! This must be one of the smallest capital cities in the world, with a population of just over 600 people. Alofi is situated along the centre of the coast of Alofi Bay on the island’s west coast, which incidentally is the only place around the island that there’s a break in the coral.

When Should You Visit?:

Niue benefits from a tropical climate with little variation in temperature throughout the year. It is moderated by the south east trade winds and the most rainfall occurs between November and April.
