Population growth

There are over 7 billion people living on Earth and according to estimates by the Population Reference Bureau, as of 2015, there have been 108.2 billion people who have ever been born. If we taking away the 7.4 billion who are alive, we get 100.8 billion who have died before us. And if Facebook were a country, it would be the third most populous in the world, with 1.39 billion “citizens” logging on to the site every month.

Asia is estimated to have 60 per cent of the world's population. In 7 years, Indians will cross the 1.44 billion mark and is expected to surpass China by 2025/2030 in population growth.

On the World Population Day, we take a look at some facts about India's population:

India vs US

India is about one-third the size of the US, yet it is the second most populous country in the world. The gap of the population between the two countries is 746 million.

India's most populous state

Uttar Pradesh alone has a population of 166 million which is almost equal to that of Brazil. Similarly, Orissa has more population than Canada and Chattisgarh has more population than Australia.

Most populous country in the world

According to UN report, India will overtake China to become the world's most populous country. India will continue to grow until 2061 and will start declining when its population has gone well past 1678.7 million people by then it will be the most populous country in the world.

Sex ratio

India's sex ratio is projected to improve. After 2020, India's sex ratio at birth is projected to decline.

Busiest railways in the world

30 million people travels on Indian Railway daily, which is more than the total inhabitants in Sri Lanka. And about 7.5 million people travel on Mumbai locals every day, which is close to the total population of Papua New Guinea. Moreover, Indian Railways has 1.4 million employees that is equal to the combined population of Mauritius, Bahrain, Iceland etc.
