It is where members of the Senate and the House of Representatives deliberate and debate issues facing the American people and craft the laws that govern the nation. Designed in a neoclassical style to evoke the ideals of ancient Greece and Rome, the Capitol and its iconic dome stand as a symbol of American democracy.

The second floor holds the Chambers of the House of Representatives (in the south wing) and the Senate (in the north wing) as well as the offices of the congressional leadership.

The Senate has exceptionally high authority, sometimes higher than the President or the House of Representatives. The Senate can try cases of impeachment, which can dismiss a President for misconduct.

Capitol Extensions and Dome

The House occupied its current chamber in 1857, and the Senate moved into its chamber in 1859.

The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is preserving the building's exterior stone and metals. The project will prevent water infiltration, slow deterioration of the stone and corrosion of the metals, repair damage and remove soil and stains.

The Senate majority leader is responsible for controlling the agenda of the chamber by scheduling debates and votes.
